FM1: Practical Financial Management for NGOs – Getting the Basics Right This course provides a practical introduction to financial management for managers and finance officers of small to medium sized NGOs. It covers ‘the building blocks’ of financial management: keeping accounts, financial planning, internal control and financial monitoring. The course is 5 days long and non-residential. FM2: Strategic Financial Management for NGOs – Managing for Financial Sustainability This course covers the more advanced aspects of financial management for NGOs. It is aimed at senior managers and those responsible for the strategic management of programmes. The workshop focuses on strategic financial management challenges, including financing strategies for sustainability, building reserves, financing core costs and managing donor relationships. FM3: Financial Management for Effective Programmes: a Programme Officer's Survival Course The purpose of this course is to build the confidence and skills of programme staff to use financial management tools to implement project activities in a cost effective, controlled and accountable way. Course content includes an introduction to the building blocks of financial management; challenges in the field; and financial monitoring. No previous financial management training or experience is required. This is the companion course of the FM9: Assessing and Building Partners' Financial Management Capacity, for Programme Managers who implement programmes with local partner NGOs. FM4: Introduction to Financial Management in the Field Aimed at accountants based in the Head Offices of northern NGOs, or those who have little experience of the relief and development sector, this course helps accountants transfer their skills to the NGO environment. (This course is not suitable for Accountants working in southern NGOs.) It covers the challenges and practicalities of accounting in field-based operations, including cash accounting systems, internal control, multiple donor reporting and the impact of cultural differences. FM5: Financial Management for Effective & Sustainable Programmes – Practical Tools and Strategies for Success *** Revised and updated for 2008! *** This intensive two-week programme is designed for managers of small to medium-sized NGOs who are responsible for managing their organisation’s financial resources; and for programme managers in international NGOs who support field offices and/or advise local partner NGOs. The course focuses on: accountability and effectiveness in NGOs; integrating financial management in programme management (including a practical look at the four ‘Building Blocks’ of financial management); and managing for financial sustainability. This course is is fully residential (i.e. accomodation is included in the course fee) at Oriel FM6: Financial Management for Board Members Board members are the guardians of their NGO’s financial resources, but they are often ill-prepared for the role. This workshop provides a practical introduction to the financial management responsibilities of a board member, including how to achieve accountability and transparency, who does what, and how to read financial reports and budgets. Financial Management for Humanitarian Programme Staff This course prepares non-finance staff working in humanitarian response situations in how to manage cash, accounting records and budgets to meet programme objectives and fulfil donor requirements. FM8: Grant Management - How to Keep Your Donors Happy This 2- day course is specially designed for NGO staff who manage institutional donor grants where programmes are implemented directly or through operational partners. It includes sessions on responsibilities and routines; reporting to donors and managing key relationships. FM9: Assessing and Building Partners' Financial Management Capacity - NEW!! The purpose of this course is to build the confidence and skills of NGO staff to assess and strengthen local partner NGOs' financial management systems and capacity. This course is designed for both finance and non-finance staff in international NGOs whose role includes supporting programmes implemented by local partner NGOs, and assessing the partners' capacity to manage project funds. Content includes using assessment checklists and tools, interpreting financial information and identifying strategies for strengthening systems. For those with no previous financial management experience or training, it is recommended that they first attend the companion course - FM3: Financial Management for Effective Programmes: a Programme Officer's Survival Course - which takes place immediately before the FM9. TFT1: Getting the Financial Management Message Across: A short course for Finance Trainers This is for those who have to train others – such as field staff or partner NGOs – in how to manage finances more effectively. The course provides an opportunity to design and practice participatory style training, to make finance training more effective and even enjoyable. It requires a background in, or a good working knowledge of, finance but no previous training experience. This course is 4 days long and non-residential. It covers: the cash accounting system, monthly routines, accounting for projects and producing and reading financial reports. This is a 1-day course. The day includes an overview of the financial planning process, the functions and types of budget, cost structures and practical approaches to budgeting. Practical sessions on building a project budget and cashflow forecast are also included. This is a 1-day course. BE2: Budgeting for Project Proposals: How to write budgets that win funds This 1-day course is specifically designed for NGO staff who are involved in the preparation of budgets to accompany project funding proposals. It is the perfect companion course to our Grant Management - How to Keep Your Donors Happy (FM8) course. The content includes: what a donor is looking for in a project budget, linking the budget to a project description and proposal, how to prepare a fully costed budget, and preparing a budget in donor formats. This one-day workshop demystifies financial statements and helps managers to read and use internal financial reports. It looks at the Balance Sheet, Budget Monitoring Reports and analysis tools and techniques. A must for any manager who needs to make sense of figures! This is a 1-day course.
