Senior manager / director positions in NGOs 

If you have a proven track record as a senior finance manager or director and are looking to pursue a senior career in the NGO sector, we have a NEW service that might be for you. 

Our Executive Search service is designed to find the right people for senior NGO vacancies. We use our extensive network of contacts across the sector to identify opportunities before they are advertised more widely.  We will act quickly and confidentially on your behalf and we will raise your profile within key agencies that you wish to work with. 


Assess your suitability

To progress further, you will need to assess whether this service is appropriate for you. This following is a composite list of selection criteria that have been used in the recruitment of senior finance executives. We hope it will help you consider whether you have the depth and breadth of experience for senior finance positions within NGOs.

Please remember that it is only a rough guide. It provides no guarantee of success or failure.

Do you hold a relevant finance /accounting degree or professional qualification that is internationally recognised e.g. ACCA, ACA, CIMA?
Do you have at least five years financial management or accounting experience at a senior level?
Do you have not for profit experience,  preferably with an international NGO?
Have you worked in an international environment, preferably in a developing country?
Are you familiar with accounting software packages (such as Sun, Sage, QuickBooks, Peoplesoft) and Microsoft Excel at an advanced level?
Do you have an understanding of SORP, taxation, charity and company legislation?
Are you familiar with institutional donors such as EU, DFID, USAID/OFDA?
Have you had direct responsibility for managing a staff team?
Do your key strengths include excellent interpersonal and communication skills, including a proven ability to communicate with clarity and sensitivity with people from diverse cultural backgrounds?
Do you have experience of setting and achieving targets and producing work of high quality to tight deadlines?
Do you have an ability to think analytically and demonstrate sound judgement?
Do you have a proven ability for strategic planning, implementation and monitoring?
Are you able to interact with colleagues at all levels and external contacts with confidence and diplomacy?
Do you have an interest in and a commitment to international relief and development?
Are you familiar with what aid agencies do and how they work?
Are you willing to work for a less than commercial salary?

Terms and conditions

To ensure that we are covering our administrative and staff costs for the more labour intensive, tailored Executive Search, we also charge individuals a fee, based on results. This fee is calculated at 10% of your first month salary, once an appointment has been confirmed.

To request a job search. please submit your CV and a covering letter, outlining how your skills and experience meet the criteria stated above, to financestaff@mango.org.uk.

Once you have submitted your CV and if you have sufficient relevant experience, you will be contacted in 3 – 5 days, to discuss your application further.  If we agree to do an executive search on your behalf, you will be asked to provide proof of identity and references from recent employers, as well as to sign a criminal offense disclosure form. 

Unfortunately we are not able to contact people who are not able to demonstrate the key skills or experience required for this service.

What if I see a job advertised and want to apply for it directly?

If you see a job advertised in the media, you may decide to apply directly. If however we have already alerted you to a specific post we do ask that you allow the recruitment to progress through Mango, to avoid any unnecessary confusion or duplication.

What options do I have if Mango is unable to undertake an executive search on my behalf?

If in discussion with Mango, it is agreed that the Executive search is not the most effective approach to your job search, you may consider applying to join Mango’s register.
