As a consultant

Mango is increasingly asked to source senior finance professionals, with previous NGO experience, to resolve specific finance issues. Our consultancies are often short term (perhaps 10 – 50 days) and may be in the field or head office of an NGO.

Assess your suitability

Before you consider applying to work with Mango as a consultant, please spend a few moments assessing your suitability.

The following checklist will help you to think through whether you are in a position to work with NGOs as a consultant.  Please note that this is only a rough guide and provides no guarantee of whether your application will be successful.

Do you hold a professional accounting or finance qualification, that is recognised internationally (i.e. CIMA, ACCA, ICAEW etc)?
Have you had at least 3 years senior financial management responsibility in an international organisation, preferably in a developing country?
Have you worked as part of a senior management team and worked directly with a Board of Trustees?
Have you a proven and successful track record as a consultant working in a business advisory and/or organisational consultancy role?
Do you have experience of setting and achieving targets and producing work of high quality to tight deadlines?
Do your key strengths include excellent interpersonal and communication skills, including presentation skills?
Are you willing to be flexible to respond to clients needs and help define those needs where required?
Do you have sound knowledge of specific accounting software (such as Sun, Sage, QuickBooks, ACCPAC) and Microsoft Excel at an advanced level?
Are you committed to relief and development aims?
Do you have experience of what aid agencies do and how they work?
Are you familiar with donor reporting requirement of institutional donors such as EU, DFID, USAID/OFDA and ECHO?
Are you willing to work for a relatively modest daily rate?

If you meet most of these criteria, please consider applying to join Mango as a consultant.  If you do not meet most of these criteria, but would still like to work with NGOs, you might like to assess your suitability for other kinds of NGO work.  Please go to the In the Field or At Head Office sections to find out more.
